I’m sorry but this summation of solving ‘awkward’ days like these is completely mindless. Many people suffer serious emotional and physical abuse and by saying things like ‘lighten his load’ dismisses the core of the problem. This contributes to undercurrents of encouragement in which the abuser (or whichever term fits each case) is made to believe their previous behavior has no real consequences nor makes them a shameful family member – one of the biggest ways they can actually be forced to change (i.e embarrassment).

I was raised to be “hard” by the actions of my parents and I just don’t have it in me to do the card thing or the hug thing with him. Feels awkward as hell

Now that my dad’s older he wants a card and a hug. It’s kinda sad but I cannot do it

Best I do is grill up something nice for him for Father’s Day out of respect and skip the sappy parts
